[A rat-faced little creature stares back at him, its mop of unruly curls weighed down by the culmination of grease and grime so that almost nothing of its pockmarked face leers out from behind it save the yellow of its eyes, glinting like a cat's, brightened by an inherent sort of cunning. Arms as thin and spindly as a child's wrap around its shrunken middle, bunching at discoloured rags, preternaturally long fingers worrying at the hem of the sweatstained potato sack it wears like a waistcoat. It's small as a street urchin, shrivelled by neglect and malnourishment. Pathetic, almost, from the overgrown nails of its bare toes to the rounded hunch of its shoulders. Contemptuous. Pitiful.
Yet the grin it wears stretches from one ear to the next, wide and sharp with the flash of too many teeth. Predatory. It smiles back at him in beady-eyed patience, its grin yawning wider until those inhuman eyes begin to crinkle in self-satisfaction. Javert feels vaguely sick to look at it.
He has to turn his face away to swallow the sudden lump in his throat, bitterness flooding his tongue, his Adam's apple bobbing against the strangle of his crisply starched collar, only to raise it again a moment later, forcing himself to gaze at the duplicitous little gremlin sneering back at him in the mirror, as though afraid to take his eyes off of it.
